Rod and reel suited to the venue — a longer beachcaster for open sandy beaches, a shorter, stronger rod for rock and pier marks
Line and traces appropriate to the ground — stronger, abrasion-resistant line over rock and mixed ground
A selection of pre-tied rigs, or the components to tie your own
Weights across a range of sizes to cope with tide strength as it changes through the session
Bait box or cool bag to keep bait fresh
A sharp knife, forceps or disgorger, and a landing net or drop net if fishing from a height

Safety and comfort

Head torch plus spare batteries
Weather-appropriate clothing — layers, and waterproofs even if the forecast looks settled
Appropriate footwear for the ground — studded boots or waders for rock and weed, wellies for sand and mud
